Physicals Q&A
What types of physicals are available at Sacred Heart Medical Group PC?
At Sacred Heart Medical Group PC, we offer annual physicals for all of our patients along with specialized physicals, like:
- Work physicals
- Sports physicals
- School physicals
- Physicals required by volunteer agencies
For these specialized physicals, each exam features evaluations based on the requirements of the requesting agency. After your exam, Dr. Oboite fills out any paperwork your group requires.
What happens during a physical exam?
Although some parts of your exam can differ based on the type of physical you’re having, most specialized and annual exams follow a similar pattern.
First, you’ll update your personal and family medical history so we have an up-to-date record of your health. Next, we’ll take your weight and blood pressure.
During the exam itself, Dr. Oboite:
- Listens to your heart and lungs
- Evaluates your ears and vision
- Palpates your belly to feel your liver or other organs
- Tests your reflexes
- Checks your neck for signs of swelling
- Performs other evaluations based on your exam requirements
Depending on your exam results, Dr. Oboite may order blood tests or urinalysis, as well.
At the end of your exam, Dr. Oboite will complete any necessary paperwork and discuss treatment recommendations based on your exam results.
Should I do anything to prepare for my exam?
Be prepared to discuss your personal and family health history. If you’re taking medications, bring them with you to your appointment or be ready to list them (that includes vitamins and over-the-counter medications you use regularly). Finally, wear loose clothing to make it easier for Dr. Oboite to take your blood pressure and listen to your heart and lungs.
Why is a sports physical important?
Sports physicals use evaluations focused on your sport or activity to make sure your body is ready for the demands of that specific sport. These physicals may identify issues that need to be treated before you begin your sport, so that you can stay healthy and enjoy your activity to its fullest.
How often should I have a physical?
Specialized physicals are conducted as often as required by your school, job, or sports organization. “Regular” physical exams are recommended once a year to allow Dr. Obotie to maintain an ongoing record of your health, and monitor for any developing issues that can benefit from early intervention.
